On my first day here in Copenhagen, the biggest question I had was "what's with all of these loud busses?" but now that I know they're for graduation and I can cheer every time one passes me, I do have some real questions about what I'm seeing and experiencing:
- Is there a connection between the amount of public spaces in the city and the community trust between everyone living here?
- Every Danish person I have spoken to has talked about the trust that they have in each other, whether it is for not stealing stuff or not running someone over with a car, and I can't help but wonder if the amount of public spaces they have allows them to get to know each other well enough that they can form trust like this.
- How is the architecture always so creative?
- I feel as if in the US cost is always an issue so many buildings are boring and not pleasing to look at, but here, I wonder how everything is so pretty and creative. It might be because everything was historic, but it seems the new architecture is very creative too, and someone else brought up a good point that Denmark doesn't have to worry about earthquakes so that might be why as well.
- Why does everyone follow the rules?
- I tried to ask Bike Mike this but he was clearly not a good person to ask, and I've been meaning to ask another Danish person, but you don't see people breaking rules or jaywalking here nearly as much, and I wonder why that is or if it has something to do with their community trust in each other or just better infrastructure.
- How did the infrastructure come to be and what is the history behind it?
- In all the videos and articles I've seen, none of them have dived as deep into the bike history of Copenhagen as much as places like Amsterdam, so I'm wondering how it was different, and it would be nice to hear from the perspective of a Danish person, rather than just someone on the internet.
Those are the main questions I have right now, but I'm sure things will get answered in the next couple of days.
- Lauren
